The Cuban government and its national operator Union Electrica, which controls the production, transmission, distribution and sales of electricity for some 2.6 million subscribers (95% of the island's inhabitants), have launched a vast investment program to modernize power plants with the aim of reducing fuel consumption per kWh produced. The program also includes the development of electricity transmission and distribution infrastructures.

In this context, Unión Eléctrica, aware of the dangers of electrocution for maintenance operators working remotely, potentially on overhead medium-voltage installations, on scaffolding with tools made of conductive materials, asked its Mexican supplier Teisa to provide solutions to reduce the risks. Sicame Argentina proposed the innovative LIAT solution of high-strength fiberglass-insulated modular platforms. LIAT platforms are specifically designed for the maintenance of medium-voltage electrical infrastructures, thanks to their high resistance to corrosion, light weight and ease of installation. This insulated equipment can be used with voltages of up to 500 kV at heights of 8 meters, and has a load capacity of 300 kg. LIAT ISM-8 insulated scaffolding is produced by Sicame Argentina and complies with the IEC-60855 standard.

The contract signed in January 2015 initially covers around fifty platforms.
